Burger King’s New Guest-Inspired Whopper Has One Big Problem

Estimated read time2 min read

  • I tried Burger King’s new Peppercorn BLT Whopper, the latest burger from its Whopper by You platform.
  • The peppercorn mayo, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese worked well enough, but the burger played things very safe.
  • Compared with the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper, this one was much less exciting and a lot less craveable.

Last time I had Burger King, it was the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper. I expected to tap out after a respectable sample, and instead, I inhaled the whole thing. Hats off to the guest who dreamed that one up for Burger King’s Whopper by You platform, because the candied bacon-jalapeño-barbecue situation was so absurdly in my wheelhouse that I left feeling satisfied and honestly a little impressed.

So I had to try the next one in line: the new Peppercorn BLT Whopper.

Burger King’s latest guest-inspired build features a quarter-pound flame-grilled beef patty topped with peppercorn mayo, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and the chain’s newly improved sesame seed bun. Which, on paper, did not exactly send me into a frenzy. To be blunt, it sounded like a regular burger with bacon and…a condiment. Nice, I guess. If you want to put peppercorn on a pedestal, be my guest, but it’s not exactly candied bacon and bourbon barbecue, you know?

What Does Burger King’s Peppercorn BLT Whopper Taste Like?

The burger tasted pretty much exactly how I expected it to, which is not an insult. Peppercorn mayo is a solid burger topping. You get the black pepper, the creamy mayo, a little tang, a little garlic, and a little onion. It makes sense, and it plays well with the bacon. It also works with the lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Nothing was out of place, and nothing necessarily offended me.

But nothing really thrilled me, either.

That’s kind of the whole story with this burger. It’s good. It’s a totally respectable fast-food burger. But for something that came out of a platform designed around dream Whoppers and fan-fueled creativity, it feels a little bit too safe. Like maybe the person who came up with it is just deeply committed to mayonnaise. Or maybe the competition pool was not exactly bursting with innovation this round.

And I’m not trying to be mean here, but if we’re putting this head-to-head with the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper from last month, this one doesn’t come close. When I placed my order, the Maple Bourbon BBQ Whopper was still sitting right there on the menu, and let’s just say if my finger had slipped and added that one to my cart too, I would not have been upset.

The Verdict

The Peppercorn BLT Whopper is a decent fast-food burger with a little extra flair, but it doesn’t exactly swing for the fences. If you like peppercorn mayo, bacon, and a more classic burger build, you’ll probably have a nice time with it. But if you’re looking for the kind of guest-inspired Whopper that feels a little outside the box in the best way, the Maple Bourbon BBQ still has this one beat.
