Capri Sun was never really about hydration when I was growing up. It was about the thrill of jabbing that flimsy little straw through the tiny foil hole without missing, tossing one into your lunchbox, and drinking something cold and sugary at the beach like your life depended on it. It was a juice-pouch moment, not exactly an electrolyte one. But hydration is big now, and apparently even Capri Sun knows it has to keep up.

The brand is rolling out Capri Sun Hydrate, a new pouch drink with electrolytes aimed specifically at kids. That is a first for Capri Sun, which has built its whole reputation on nostalgia and the occasional straw-related injury, not sports-drink territory.

The new line will come in Fruit Punch, Tropical Punch, and Lemon Lime, and Capri Sun says it is made with Vitamin E, contains 50 percent less sugar than leading regular sports drinks, and skips artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.

Parents want something that feels a little more functional than a standard juice pouch, and Capri Sun, which already has the kid-brand recognition part locked down, is now trying to move into that in-between lane of “still fun” and “slightly more purposeful.”

Capri Sun Hydrate will start showing up at major retailers nationwide, including Walmart, Target, and Amazon. Whether kids will see it as a true sports-drink replacement or just another pouch in the rotation remains to be seen.

But if Capri Sun can get them to drink electrolytes with the same enthusiasm they once reserved for sticky Fruit Punch at age 8, that is probably a win.
