- Costco is testing smaller eight-count bagel packs instead of requiring bulk purchases.
- Some shoppers love the flexibility, while others question the value.
- The change has sparked debate over pricing and portion sizes.
Costco is making a small change to one of its most reliable bakery staples, and members everywhere are rejoicing.
The warehouse chain is now testing a new way to sell its Kirkland Signature bagels. Instead of requiring customers to buy two packs at once, locations are now selling one bag of eight bagels for $4.99. Previously, shoppers had to commit to two six-packs of bagels for $5.99, whether they wanted that many or not.
Members have long complained about the old packaging style. A dozen bagels can be a big commitment. And Costco’s bagels have a reputation for growing mold quickly, thanks to the preservative-free recipe. This new setup seems more practical and might help reduce food waste.
Some shoppers are fully on board. “About time!!” one person wrote. Another added, “I never buy them for home because I don’t want 12 bagels, so love the single pack option!” Members everywhere are celebrating the change, but not everyone is convinced this is a win.
A lot of the pushback comes down to value. Some shoppers argue it’s essentially a price increase in disguise, since you now receive four fewer bagels while only saving a dollar. One person did the math and pointed out that the price per bagel doesn’t change that dramatically, with only a four-cent increase compared to the previous pricing.
Skeptical members, however, point to a broader trend of Costco products giving you less bang for your buck. “So they removed choice and quantity. Good job Costco,” one person wrote. To their credit, the change strikes a similar chord to the warehouse’s muffin reformulation in 2024. But for now, it seems most members are excited by this new bakery update.
