- The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Tatyana Ali shares the reason she would fight with costar Carlton (played by Alfonso Ribeiro).
- She just couldn’t resist the craft services snacks—despite the fact that they worked on a hot set where you weren’t supposed to eat.
- She also reminisced over the best ‘90s snacks, including Fruit Roll-Ups, astronaut ice cream, and Tang!
Sure, your office might have a snack table of sorts—with stale granola bars and those tiny single-serve Doritos bags—but your corporate spread could never compete with craft services. The on-set catering really is as over-the-top as you’d expect. Maybe even more so.
Just ask The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Tatyana Ali, who was so passionate about the snack station that it would spark fights with her on-screen brother Carlton (played by Alfonso Ribeiro).
“[Craft services had] everything you could ever want,” she reveals on the latest episode of SNACKS!. “Bagels and cream cheese, and sweets [like] M&M’s. Coca-Cola, ginger ale, ginger beer, water. Anything you want at any time during the day…everything was so excessive.”
“I remember Alfonso and I—he played Carlton on the show—having fights over M&M’s on the set,” Tatyana says. “[It was a] hot set, you’re not supposed to eat anything, and the prop guys would be like, ‘You can have them! Go ahead, it’s fine!’ They looked up at my mom, who was in the bleachers. ‘She’s good, she can have the M&M’s.’”
But Ribeiro wasn’t as supportive as the prop guys. “Alf and I got into a huge fight,” she laughs. “He’s like ‘It’s a hot set!’ Total big brother. ‘You can’t eat those! That’s so unprofessional.’”
“I was like ‘They told me I could!’”
While Tatyana was clearly a fan of the staple snack, it wasn’t the only fave from her Fresh Prince days. “Fruit roll-ups,” she names, when asked about her go-to treats from the ‘90s. “The rainbow milk at the end of The Flintstones [cereal] was my jam. Tang! Tang! I used to love Tang.”
“And astronaut ice cream. I don’t know where my friend’s mom worked, but she always had astronaut ice cream, and she would bring it to school for me.”
