Panera is doing something that feels both obvious and slightly chaotic: putting salad inside bread. The chain just announced its newest menu launch, the Salad Stuffer, a summer-approved riff on bread bowls. Instead of soup inside bread, Panera is now stuffing full salads into a brand-new Italian Stuffer Roll, creating what it’s calling a “perfect bite every time” situation.

The new Italian Stuffer Roll is designed to be soft and fluffy while still holding up against fully dressed salads, which is key here. No one wants to end up with a soggy mess halfway through lunch.

You can technically turn any salad on the menu into a Stuffer, including staples like the Caesar or Green Goddess Cobb. But Panera is also launching two versions that are clearly meant to show off the new format.

The Steakhouse Salad Stuffer is the heartier option. It’s filled with romaine and arugula and tossed in a new farmhouse ranch, plus sliced steak, bacon, gorgonzola, pickled red onions, tomatoes, and crispy onions. It’s very loaded, very indulgent, and feels closer to a sandwich than a salad, which is kind of the point.

Then there’s the Santa Fe Salad Stuffer, which leans a little lighter. This one has grilled chicken, roasted corn, feta, sweet peppers, cilantro, and tortilla strips, all tossed in ranch.

Eating a salad this way is undeniably more convenient—no chasing ingredients around a bowl and no awkward forkfuls that fall apart before they make it to your mouth. Everything is contained, and every bite is consistent.

It also offers a somewhat more substantial option for those who are looking for a vegetable-forward lunch that’s a bit more filling. For bread bowl lovers on the go, the Salad Stuffer offers a similar experience in a portable package. And, above all else, it’s a strong reminder that at Panera, everything eventually comes back to bread.

Salad Stuffers are available starting today at Panera locations nationwide through dine-in, pickup, delivery, and drive-through.
