E.l.f. Launched A Pickle-Flavored Lip Balm—Here’s How It Tastes

  • e.l.f. Cosmetics launched a new limited-edition pickle-flavored lip balm.
  • Big Dill features a bright green tint that fades to a sheer, glossy finish.
  • The flavor starts bold and briny, then fades into a slightly sweet cucumber-melon taste.

The beauty brand e.l.f. has just added a new flavor to its Glow Reviver Melting Lip Balm lineup, giving skincare a surprisingly savory twist. Big Dill features the same fan-favorite moisturizing formula… but with a dill pickle flavor.

Pickles have already found their way into the most unexpected products, like Cheetos, Popeye’s lemonade, and even hard seltzer. But is lip balm a step too far? I got my hands on a tube to try for myself. Here’s what you need to know.

The Big Dill leans into all things pickle, starting with the color. Not only is the packaging a bright green tube, but the lip balm itself is bright green. It straight-up looks like Ghostbusters-level ectoplasm.

I was, admittedly, a bit nervous about how this would look on my face. The shade was especially prominent against my skin when I swatched it on my hand, and the green hue faded only slightly as I spread it.

But, by some miracle, the green isn’t visible once it’s actually on your lips. The finish is sheer and super glossy. It also has a slightly sticky texture, which may bother some people. But as a devout gloss wearer, I don’t mind.

And now it’s time to address the elephant in the room: the pickle. Straight from the tube, the lip balm smells like a combination of pickle and—hear me out—wall paint.

I’m not sure if it’s the dill or the vinegar note, but something about the smell is giving Sherwin-Williams. Once you spread it on your lips, that aroma thankfully dissipates a bit.

The flavor experience follows a similar journey. You’re immediately hit with the briny, herbaceous, slightly salty flavor of pickles, but it doesn’t take long for those savory notes to settle.

After a few seconds, the lip balm shifts into something more reminiscent of cucumber melon. Which makes sense, you know, considering what pickles are.

Honestly, it’s a welcome change. Prolonged pickle flavor on my lips would get old quickly. But a lightly fruity cucumber-melon flavor? That I can get behind. It’s what transforms this lip balm from a gimmicky stunt into an actually functional product.

If you really love pickles—or want to treat someone to a surprisingly enjoyable gag gift—this e.l.f. lip balm is worth a buy. Big Dill is available online for $9, but only for a limited time, so you’ll want to act fast.
