When I moved across the country, it became glaringly obvious how food culture changes from region to region. As a Wisconsinite, I was used to eating cheese curds and bratwurst on the regular. We’d eat kringles for breakfast alongside a cup of joe (or a Bloody Mary on the weekend) and enjoy a Friday night fish fry at a local supper club.
But sometimes when you’re used to something, you don’t think about how special it really is. Now that I’m 800 miles from home, I’m feeling particularly nostalgic for a taste of home—so I asked my mom to send me a batch of her delicious Ranch Oyster Crackers.
Why I Love Ranch Oyster Crackers
Now, I know this dish isn’t Midwestern in origin, but it sure feels Midwestern in spirit. Ranch is a beloved condiment across the country, but holds a special place in the heart of Midwesterners. According to the Association of Dressings and Sauces (dream job, anyone?) ranch dressing is more popular in the Midwest than any other region in the country. So it’s safe to say we chow down on this piquant product often.
Ranch Oyster Crackers may be my favorite way to get my fill of ranch. This famously retro appetizer has been around for quite some time, and is beloved in homes across the country. And sure, I could take the 30 minutes or so to make myself a batch of these snackable, herby crackers, but it just tastes so much better from my mom’s kitchen. Love is always the most important ingredient!
How To Make Ranch Oyster Crackers
Dotdash Meredith Food Studios
This dish has three simple components: oyster crackers, vegetable oil, and seasonings. You can keep it simple with a pack of ranch-style dressing mix, or bump up the herbaceousness with the addition of dried dill, lemon pepper, and garlic powder.
Simply mix the oil and seasonings together in a bowl. Add the oyster crackers and toss to coat evenly. Spread the crackers on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated 250 degree F oven until lightly browned, about 15 to 20 minutes. Gently stir at the halfway point. Let them cool before digging in—you’ll be amazed at how quickly a batch of these crackers will disappear!
Praise From the Allrecipes Community
Several Allrecipes reviewers shared their tips and praise for this beloved recipe. “These were a hit, the kids were begging to eat them as soon as they came out of the oven,” said one Allrecipes reviewer. “I will have to make these again as they will be gone soon.”
Several suggested switching up the herbs by adding oregano, taco seasoning, or chive-and-onion mix instead of ranch. Allrecipes Allstar Jamie Justice Yost uses Goldfish crackers instead of oyster crackers to mix it up. Another reviewer added peanuts, pretzels, and Chex cereal to spread the love.
“Very easy to make and very quick,” said one Allrecipes member. “A delicious snack for on the go. I remember making these in school home economics class.”
No matter how you remix this basic recipe, you’re sure to love this easy-to-make snack. You may want to make a double batch—because if you’re anything like me, it will go quickly!
