  • Blue Apron’s exclusive supplier, FreshRealm, has filed for bankruptcy.
  • The bankruptcy comes after the company was forced to recall numerous products earlier this year.
  • Misfits Market will be taking over as the exclusive supplier for Blue Apron.

If you’re one of the folks who relies on the meal delivery service Blue Apron, you’re in for a shakeup. FreshRealm, the exclusive maker of Blue Apron’s meal kits, has filed for bankruptcy. As a result the company has proposed selling its operations to Misfit Market, an online grocer that has now secured a deal to supply Blue Apron.

Unlike FreshRealm, Misfit Market is dedicated to reducing food waste by selling produce, meats, seafood, and pantry staples that are often rejected by traditional supermarkets due to “ugly” aesthetics or packaging issues. It’s possible that Blue Apron’s ingredients might look a little different if the company switches suppliers.

But FreshRealm has been in hot water lately. While the company has expanded its production capacity in recent years, it has also moved to cut costs by closing some of its plants. This past March, FreshRealm recalled numerous products after receiving contaminated material from its suppliers.

In our review of meal kit delivery services, Blue Apron ranked as Delish’s favorite overall, which begs the question: How will this supplier change affect the meals?

According to the press release about the bankruptcy, “FreshRealm has reached an agreement with Blue Apron to resolve certain contractual and business transition matters that is subject to Court approval. If the settlement is approved by the Court, Blue Apron would exit its commercial agreement with FreshRealm and transition the related operations to a new structure, where the business is expected to continue operating.”

Should the court approve this filing, Blue Apron’s exclusive fulfillment business will transition to Misfit Market Inc. While Blue Apron maintains that operations will remain normal, consumers will have to decide if their breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are just as good as they were before.
