Lay’s Just Launched New World Cup-Inspired Flavors—Here’s How They Taste

Estimated read time2 min read

  • Lay’s launched three new flavors in the U.S. that are inspired by global cuisines ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
  • Flavors include Brazilian-Style Garlic Sauce, Wavy French Onion Soup, and Argentinian-Style Steak with Chimichurri.
  • Each chip leans into layered seasoning, with French Onion Soup standing out as the most balanced.

Lay’s is an official sponsor for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and it’s celebrating in a big way. The chip brand is rolling out a 40-flavor global collection inspired by countries competing in the tournament, with different regions getting their own lineups. In the U.S., that means three limited-edition flavors are hitting shelves next month, each pulling from a different culinary tradition.

Chips are already a universal language, so building flavors around global dishes feels like an easy way to make them more interesting without overcomplicating things. And as a bonus, you can experience international flavors without having to book a flight (or buy tickets to the matches).

We tried all three U.S. flavors—here’s our verdict for each one.

Brazilian-Style Garlic Sauce

The Brazilian-Style Garlic Sauce draws inspiration from the dipping sauce served alongside Churrasco steak. And this chip is, by far, the boldest of the group. It starts with that familiar Lay’s base but leans heavily into a rich, savory garlic profile that feels inspired by something like toum.

There’s also a subtle cheesy flavor and a hint of lemon that rounds it out. The taste builds as you go, which makes it a good option if you like something that sticks with you a little longer rather than fading out after a bite or two.

These chips are inspired by France’s most beloved cold-weather comfort food. And, of the three, these taste the most balanced and approachable. It uses the wavy chip as a base, which already gives it a slightly heartier texture, then layers in onion, aged cheddar, and herbs.

The result is something that actually does remind you of French onion soup, but in a way that feels clean and snackable. None of the notes overpower the others, and that’s what makes it work. It’s the kind of flavor you could keep going back to without getting tired of it.

Argentinian-Style Steak with Chimichurri

Argentinian cuisine is known for bold, savory flavors, but the Lay’s Argentinian-Style Steak with Chimichurri takes a surprisingly subtle route. Visually, it looks almost identical to a sour cream and onion chip, but the flavor profile is more complex. You get a mix of herbs like parsley, oregano, and basil, along with garlic and a touch of citrus.

It’s a milder experience compared to the others, but that also makes it feel more balanced overall. Every bite hits a mix of flavors rather than leaning too far in one direction.

Overall, these are can’t-miss flavors for anybody who loves Lay’s—whether they’re watching the World Cup or not. The brand displays a clear effort to reflect the inspiration behind each cuisine, even if it’s still very much a potato chip at the end of the day. I can’t imagine better snacks to enjoy during the matches.
