If you’ve been a loyal Trader Joe’s shopper for the past few years, that loyalty may actually pay off. The popular grocery chain has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit filed against the company back in 2019, which alleged that Trader Joe’s violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) at some of its stores.
The lawsuit claimed that certain Trader Joe’s locations printed receipts showing both the first six and last four digits of customers’ credit or debit card numbers, a practice that can increase the risk of identity theft. Under FACTA, businesses are prohibited from printing more than the last five digits of a customer’s card number on receipts.
Trader Joe’s has maintained that not all of its stores printed receipts this way and that, even among the stores that did, only a small number of transactions were affected. Still, the company has agreed to settle the case for $7.4 million.
The chain has also denied any wrongdoing and says there have been no known cases of identity theft tied to the receipts in question. According to the settlement terms, Trader Joe’s agreed to resolve the case in order to avoid further litigation.
The settlement still needs final court approval and is scheduled for a hearing in August 2026. If it is approved, some customers may qualify for a payout.
Eligible customers include those who made a purchase at Trader Joe’s between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, used a credit or debit card, and received a receipt showing the first six and last four digits of their card number. Anyone who is unsure whether they qualify can visit the settlement website for more information and to submit a claim
If the settlement receives final approval, eligible customers will receive $102.45, and checks will be mailed within 10 business days of that approval.
