- After returning safely to Earth, the Artemis II crew reportedly asked for uncrusted sandwiches.
- A NASA employee said that was the crew’s biggest food request after the mission.
- Uncrustables jumped in and offered the astronauts a lifetime supply of the snack.
One of the more exciting headlines these days is what the crew of Artemis II—the first crewed NASA flight to travel beyond low Earth orbit since the 1970s—has been up to during its 10-day mission. Made up of four astronauts—commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch, and mission specialist Jeremy Hansen—the Artemis II crew stayed busy testing the Space Launch System rocket’s performance and naming lunar craters.
And with all that work, it’s no surprise the astronauts worked up an appetite. After all, space food is not exactly known for being enticing. According to a news report, the team had one very specific request upon landing: uncrusted sandwiches.
“The biggest request that they had was uncrusted sandwiches, so we have abundant amounts of those for them,” said one NASA worker responsible for stocking the recovery ship with essentials.
Apparently, bread is a big no-no in space. Instead, the crew had to rely on tortillas to get its carb fix during the mission. That’s because bread crumbs, while merely annoying here on Earth, can pose a real risk in space. The crumbs can float away and potentially damage equipment on the spacecraft, which is why traditional sandwiches were off the table.
Naturally, childhood favorite snack brand Uncrustables wasted no time inserting itself into the conversation, offering the astronauts a lifetime supply of its product upon their return.
Fans of the snack were noticeably impressed by the offer. “*Googles* how to become an astronaut,” one person commented.
“It’s hard to see other people living your dream!!” joked another. “I’d become an astronaut just to get free Uncrustables as well,” one fan wrote.
Apart from making history, it looks like the crew of Artemis II has a lot to look forward to back here on solid ground.
