At a glance, Sterling K. Brown seems to have it all figured out: a successful career, a healthy routine and mindset, and a happy family to boot. Some of that, it turns out, is helped along by a few strategic shortcuts, like getting groceries and household essentials delivered to your door. The actor’s latest partnership with Shipt celebrates those little wins, whether that means you have everything for family dinners, staying stocked up on snacks for movie night, or making sure there’s enough Epsom salt on hand after a grueling workout or long day on set.
Unlike other delivery services, Shipt is known for its attention to the small things. “I love the attention to detail that the shoppers have with regard to my bag,” Brown explains. “I don’t get bruised fruit. If they have questions about the things I want, they’ll text a picture, and I can let them know either yay or nay…it’s not just about the stuff, it’s about what the stuff represents and the moments that it helps to create between people.”
As a part of his campaign with the same-day delivery service, customers can browse and shop ‘Sterling’s Extraordinary Essentials’ cart, which includes his go-to purchases, like organic eggs, peppermint tea, brioche bread, and Lumify eye drops.
That brioche, notably, plays a major role in Brown’s all-time favorite food: French toast. And when he makes it at home, he has a trick that gives it just the right flavor. “Instead of using sugar in my batter, I actually use maple syrup,” he tells me. “I actually pour the syrup in the batter and mix it in and cook it into the French toast, and then I don’t put it on it because it’s already in it.”
Just make sure you use a high-grade syrup, he cautions.
Beyond French toast, Brown also walked me through the mainstays of his household. “Number one is Taco Tuesday,” he says. The family preps all the usual taco accouterments, including guacamole, salsa, and beef. They sub in Greek yogurt for sour cream, and Brown’s wife handles her own special spice blend for the meat.
Steak and pasta are some other go-to meals in the Brown household. “My youngest son is the most carnivorous of us all and loves steak,” he says. “He loves to season the steak, and he’s gotten pretty good with his temperature and getting a medium rare finish.”
Pasta night has its own signature spin, too. “My wife has a delightful red sauce that she makes, and she takes peppers and onions and garlic and cloves, mixes it all together and chops it up very finely, so it’s almost like Trojan horsing vegetables into the meal for the kids,” Brown says of the family’s go-to spaghetti. Genius.
And while he eats pretty healthy most of the time, Brown is more than willing to get down and dirty when it comes to fast food. “Double, double animal style with the lemonade,” he says of his go-to In-N-Out order. “But I’ll try to do the less sugary version of the pink lemonade when I get it. That’s a pretty standard go-to.”
