Every Disney fan knows the lore of Dole Whip, the unofficial signature treat of the parks. The partnership between Dole and Disney dates back to the 1980s and gives parkgoers a deliciously refreshing way to cool off between posing with favorite characters and getting their adrenaline up on a roller coaster. For those unfamiliar, Dole Whip is basically pineapple soft serve that’s somehow taken the world by storm—creamy and tart without being cloyingly sweet or too heavy. Plus, it’s both dairy- and gluten-free, which makes it widely accessible.
Part of what has made it so popular is that until last year, you could only get it at Disney parks, making it feel like a rare indulgence. Last summer, however, the iconic brand packaged its soft serve and began selling pineapple and mango flavors in small cups at select retailers. Now, eager fans can get a new and improved store-bought Dole Whip in 14-ounce containers. Even better, there’s an all-new flavor joining the lineup.
In addition to pineapple and mango, shoppers can now pick up Tropical Guava Passion, which blends pineapple, guava, and passionfruit flavors. As someone who has unfortunately never had the real thing at Disney (I know, I know, don’t come for me), I can’t tell you exactly how these compare to the original. Personally, I really enjoyed all three flavors, though some of my colleagues found them a little lackluster next to the Disney version. Still, we all reached one clear conclusion: one flavor easily outshone the rest.
Pineapple Dole Whip
We obviously started with the original pineapple flavor, which had all the tropical fruit notes you’d expect from Dole Whip. It definitely tastes like real pineapple, but compared with the other two, it wasn’t nearly as creamy or as impressive as I expected.
Tropical Guava Passion Dole Whip
Next up was the new Tropical Guava Passion flavor. I think this is a great addition to the lineup. It was slightly creamier than the pineapple and had tart tropical flavors that worked really well together. Plus, the color is beautiful. Some staffers even thought it had subtle floral notes.
Mango Dole Whip
The real standout of the trio was, hands down, the mango flavor. It was the creamiest of the bunch and genuinely tasted like real, fresh mango. I’d usually say I’m biased because mango is my favorite fruit flavor, but everyone else who tried the Dole Whip gravitated toward the mango. It strikes a great balance between sorbet and ice cream, landing somewhere in the middle and totally delivering on flavor.
The Verdict
While it may not fully live up to the Dole Whip hype at Disney parks, these store-bought versions are definitely the next best thing. They’re now available at select retailers nationwide, including Target, Hannaford, Stop & Shop, and Publix, and will also be available seasonally at Costco this spring.
