As the “Cake Boss,” Buddy Valastro has built an entire career around bakery stories that make you want to eat a pastry immediately. But during the latest episode of SNACKS!, Buddy shared a memory that hit a lot harder than your average dessert conversation.
Sitting with Delish Editorial Director Joanna Saltz and his wife, Lisa, while eating lobster tails, Buddy started talking about his father, who helped shape both the family business and the pastries that became staples at Carlo’s Bakery. And then he told a story that honestly stops you in your tracks.
Buddy explained that after his father died, the bakery was struggling to get the lobster tails just right. His dad had always handled the final touches. Then, Buddy said, he had the first dream he’d had of his father since he passed.
In the dream, Buddy saw him back at the bakery. He remembered saying, basically in disbelief, that he couldn’t believe he was there. And his father’s response was not exactly soft and sentimental. According to Buddy, he said: “I’m not here to f— around with you. I’m here to show you how to pull lobster tails one more time.”
It’s loving (and a little blunt), and Buddy even said he gets chills when he tells the story. The internet’s reactions to hearing it were immediate, and a lot more emotional than your average food clip comment section.
Some people saw the dream as a “visit and a gift from God.” Another said, “That is a beautiful gift he gave you. I have had relatives visit me in my dreams also. It stays with you and it is surreal.” Others connected it to their own grief, with one commenter sharing that after their dad died, they dreamed of him often, too. And then there were the people who said the story just confirmed what they’ve always felt watching Buddy on TV: beyond the talent, he’s always come across as someone with a huge, open heart.
Because sometimes the most moving food stories aren’t really about the food at all.
