- SkinnyPop has voluntarily recalled its newly launched White Cheddar Popcorn due to its close resemblance to the non-dairy version.
- The company is concerned that consumers may confuse the similar packaging, leading to issues for those with milk allergies.
- The popcorn is fine to consume for those without food allergies, but those with lactose intolerance or milk allergies should avoid it.
A wise word to all my fellow snackers—popular popcorn brand SkinnyPop is recalling one of its newly launched flavors for a potentially life-threatening reason. While nothing is actually wrong with the product in question, the brand noticed that its White Cheddar Popcorn and dairy-free White Cheddar Popcorn share very similar packaging, which could lead consumers to mistake one for the other. The company is voluntarily removing its newly launched White Cheddar Popcorn from store shelves out of an abundance of caution for consumers with milk allergies.
In a press release announcing the recall, the company assured consumers that all SkinnyPop products are accurately labeled, including ingredient lists and allergen statements.
“While the dairy-containing White Cheddar Popcorn variety is safe for consumers who do not have milk allergies, consumers with milk allergies who have the dairy-containing White Cheddar Popcorn should not consume it,” the release clarifies.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Symptoms of milk allergy range from mild to severe and can include wheezing, vomiting, hives, and digestive problems. Milk allergy can also cause anaphylaxis, a severe, life-threatening reaction.” Those with a milk allergy or lactose intolerance should double-check their SkinnyPop White Cheddar Popcorn to ensure they picked up the correct kind.
