- A social media influencer is facing backlash after sharing a video online detailing how she washes her dirty underwear in hotel coffee machines.
- After much public backlash and rumors of a lawsuit, the influencer posted another video claiming it was all a joke.
- The Internet is unsurprisingly not amused with the entire discourse.
I consider myself a pro traveler—after all, I do write about food and travel for a living. And over the years, I’ve picked up quite a few travel hacks. Case in point: I never order coffee or tea on the airplane. One thing you’ll absolutely never see me doing, though, has just gone viral on social media…and like me, people really aren’t having it.
Social media influencer Tara Woodcox has gone viral for all the wrong reasons. She took to Instagram recently to reveal a travel hack she uses (or doesn’t, depending on which of her videos you want to believe) that involves your handy dandy hotel room coffee maker. But Woodcox doesn’t use it to brew her coffee beans—instead, she touts it as a great place to wash your underwear. That’s right, this genius thinks dirty clothes and food equipment go hand in hand. Ick.
In her video, Woodcox claims she learned the hack from a flight attendant, who suggests using the coffee maker to clean dirty underwear if you run out…you know, instead of going to a laundromat or buying more at a store.
Unsurprisingly, the Internet is going off on the creator for this very unhygienic practice. “I’ll never use a hotel room coffee maker again,” one person commented. “I would take this down. It truly gives not-so-smart people a bad idea. Talk about unsanitary and disgusting,” another person wrote.
“Brilliant? That’s so rude, disgusting, and inconsiderate! Why even share something like this?” another person questioned. “If it’s supposed to be funny it isn’t,” one person wrote.
“The fact that you thought it was ok to show the world that you put your USED underwear in a public coffee machine is beyond disgusting. Is this satire?” another person commented.
After much public backlash, Woodcox finally made a follow-up post addressing the original.
In it, the influencer claims the original video was a joke, and she’s “never actually done that” and “it’s really funny.” She continues, saying that she finds the entire discourse around her video “pretty entertaining.” However, commenters online weren’t quite buying it.
“Damn you cant even lie well,” one person wrote. “Hope you laugh like that when you go to court,” said another. “I’m shocked your lawyer didn’t tell you to stop discussing this in public,” posted another person.
“It’s entertaining to you to tell people to put their dirty underwear in public hotel coffee makers??” another questioned.
The follow-up video was posted earlier today after rumors of a lawsuit began circling. While completely unsubstantiated, there were reports that the hotel chain where Woodcox filmed her initial video had to replace all coffee machines and filed a lawsuit against the creator. True or not, please don’t put anything besides coffee in any coffee maker—especially if it’s in a hotel.
