My Grandpa’s Easy 4-Ingredient Salsa Recipe Is a Family Favorite

Food, like I’m sure it is for most people, is extremely important in my family. Being of Mexican descent, we find it’s a way to feel closer to our roots and express our heritage. Some of my favorite memories are watching my nana cook in the kitchen, making menudo during the holidays, or bringing home barbacoa on Sundays for the family to enjoy.

But as I grew older and slowly moved away from home, cooking became a way to help deal with my homesickness. After graduating from college, I knew I wanted to jot down all my family recipes so I could go back to them again and again.

This particular recipe hails from my dad’s side of the family and comes from my grandpa.

What Sets My Grandpa’s Recipe Apart From the Rest

When you think of salsa recipes, you might think of the daunting task of gathering fresh ingredients and preparing them. Take our most popular salsa recipe—while it calls for only seven ingredients, three of them are fresh, which might require a trip to the store. That’s why I’m so grateful for my grandpa’s recipe. Not only is it incredibly simple with just four ingredients, but it only requires one fresh ingredient. Thank you, Grandpa Soliz.

How To Make Grandpa Soliz’s 4-Ingredient Salsa

Ingredients

  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can stewed tomatoes
  • 4 to 6 jalapeño chile peppers, stems removed
  • Onion powder to taste
  • Garlic salt to taste

Directions

  1. Place tomatoes and jalapeños in a blender.
  2. Season with onion powder and garlic salt (start small on the spices and build—you can always add more, but you can’t take away).
  3. Blend on high speed until reaches desired consistency is reached. Taste for seasoning.
  4. Pour salsa into a bowl. Serve.

Recipe Tip

For extra flavor, roast the jalapeños before adding them to the blender.
