This Game Day Appetizer Is So Good, Everyone Always Asks for the Recipe

Are you planning your snacks for the Super Bowl yet? It can seem daunting to come up with something new to add to the usuals, such as wings and pizza. We’re here to give you a brilliant idea that everyone will love on your food spread.

You wouldn’t think a recipe titled Tailgate Tacos would start with wonton wrappers, but that’s exactly how this recipe for mini taco cups begins. You can make your own wonton wrappers, but store-bought ones work just as well. These thin dough sheets are the same ones that serve as the foundation in some of our favorite snacks, such as crab rangoon and jalapeño popper wontons.

For this easy recipe, you’ll need a mini muffin tin, wonton wrappers, and some taco fillings.

How to Make Tailgate Tacos

Even the name of these small bites screams, “These belong on the snack table for the Super Bowl.”

To make Tailgate Tacos, brown some ground beef, then add your favorite taco seasoning and salsa. Place a wonton wrapper in each muffin cup, then add the beef mixture and grated cheese. Then pop them in the oven, and you’re done.

You can serve them with your favorite taco toppings such as sour cream, shredded lettuce, guacamole, and jalapeño slices. As Allrecipes member, Chef Mo says, “Everyone needs to make these! Get the kids involved in this simple recipe. Very tasty and easy to eat meal.”

Tips and Suggestions for Making Tailgate Tacos

Just because “everyone has to make them” doesn’t mean everyone has to make them exactly as the recipe is written. It’s not difficult to see how customizable this recipe can be. Members of the Allrecipes community have a few suggestions for switching them up.

  • Several members popped the mini muffin tin with just the wonton wrappers into the oven for about 5 minutes to crisp them before adding the filling.
  • Christine Miller suggested that if you do that, first add a couple of drops of water to the wonton wrappers to prevent the wonton wrapper cups from puffing up while blind-baking them on their own.
  • Bev used corn tortillas cut to fit instead of the wonton wrappers.

You can also use the wonton wrapper cups in the mini muffin tin as a jumping-off point for other fillings:

  • Switch out the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken.
  • This Wonton Wrapper Appetizers recipe fills the wonton wrapper cups with bulk pork sausage, cheese, ranch dressing, and chopped black olives.
  • Go Italian with Lasagna Cupcakes, and fill the wonton wrapper cups with ground beef, Parmesan, mozzarella, ricotta, and pasta sauce.
  • Use the filling from these King Crab Appetizers to fill the wonton wrapper cups instead of the refrigerated biscuit dough called for.
  • Deconstructed Egg Rolls Muffin Tin Style uses the wonton wrapper cups as the base for shredded chicken mixed with typical egg roll filling ingredients, plus a couple of unusual ones like corn and mayo.

You can get as creative as you dare with filling wonton wrapper cups. With so many possibilities, we’re excited to see what you come up with for the big game.
