Open up those pantry doors and check your boxes of herbal tea—nearly 30,000 bags have been recalled across seven states, as well as in Puerto Rico. Celebration Herbals voluntarily recalled 1,226 retail units of its Senna Leaf Herbal Tea due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to the CDC, Salmonella infections are a leading cause of foodborne illness, hospitalizations, and deaths worldwide.
While the recall alert does not specify how the tea bags became contaminated, given the potentially severe nature of the bacteria, it is advised that you throw away any affected product and thoroughly wash your hands and any surfaces the tea came into contact with.
The affected tea has the UPC code 628240201829, lot code 251004, and a best-by date of October 29, 2028. The product was sold in boxes, each containing 24 tea bags, and was distributed in Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.
According to Healthline, senna tea is most commonly used to help relieve constipation and is a regular aid in medical procedure prep—for example, prior to colonoscopies or surgery. Because of its long shelf life, it’s important to check your kitchen to ensure any affected product is thrown away.
