Starbucks, home of the Cold Brew and Refresher, is making a move into the protein world. The coffee giant has been rolling out new food and drink options for a while, but this could be its next big thing.

The drink in question? Protein Cold Foam. Currently being tested in select stores (though Starbucks hasn’t revealed which ones), the protein-packed foam is already gaining attention. While details are still limited, we know the foam is banana-flavored and is being added to Starbucks’ signature iced lattes. According to a press release shared with Delish, the drink will contain around 15 grams of protein. Other flavors, like chocolate, are expected to be available as well.

Starbucks is keeping most specifics under wraps, but early testers are already sharing their thoughts. The Protein Cold Foam has been described as “silky, sweet, and not at all chalky,” with no prominent protein flavor, according to Fast Company. That’s a key feat considering most protein coffees or shakes struggle with that powdery taste.

This could be a great option for people (lol, me) who are looking for an extra protein boost without sacrificing flavor or texture. Plus, for those busy mornings when a full meal just isn’t feasible, this could be the perfect on-the-go option to get some protein without the need for a sit-down breakfast.

While we’re super stoked about this potential product, the exact launch timeline remains unclear (boo). And it’s uncertain if other protein-packed items—like a protein latte—will join the menu soon.

That said, we do know that Starbucks is testing Protein Cold Foam as part of its Starting Five program. This initiative allows five select locations to trial new products, and the Protein Cold Foam isn’t the only innovation in the works. Starbucks is also testing a Parisian-style flaky croissant and a Strato Frappuccino.

If these products gain traction, which I’m sure they undoubtedly will, we could see more protein-infused drinks and internationally inspired items hitting Starbucks menus soon.
