On <em data-node-id=\"2.3\">Good Hang with Amy Poehler<\/em>, the Barefoot Contessa talks about the near-60-year marriage that still works, the one behavior that makes her see red, and why Thanksgiving shortcuts are not just allowed, they\u2019re encouraged.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">First, the love story (with a rule you can actually use). Ina and Jeffrey married in 1968, and their north star hasn\u2019t changed: every decision has to work for <em data-node-id=\"3.1\">both<\/em> of them. It\u2019s not &#8220;my way or your way,\u201d it\u2019s \u201chow do we do this our way?\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;We keep it very simple. We have a very different kind of life than we expected to,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I mean, we don&#8217;t have kids. We don&#8217;t have cats and dogs. We don&#8217;t have gerbils. It&#8217;s just the two of us. And if we&#8217;re trying to figure out what to do, we figure out what he wants to do and what I want to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-13\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<section data-embed=\"youtube\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-14\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Their rule is simple: every decision they make together has to work for both of them, she said.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">&#8220;And this is what Jeffrey taught me: Let&#8217;s figure out how we can both do what we want to do. It&#8217;s not about whether we get to do what you want to do or I want to do,&#8221; Garten said. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As Ina puts it, Jeffrey\u2019s the guy who actually wants to <em data-node-id=\"9.1\">be<\/em> with you, not the guy who vanishes to play golf. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Then Amy digs to find out what it is that puts Ina, a notoriously happy and warm person, in a bad mood. &#8220;Passive-aggressive people who tell you what you want to hear and do exactly as they please make me crazy,&#8221; she admits. &#8220;And I can chew on them for years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Tell her the truth, collaborate, put all the info on the table\u2014don\u2019t sandbag the room and call it kindness. &#8220;I don\u2019t like people who withhold information so that they control the situation, because then I\u2019m making a decision without the real information,&#8221; she adds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"instagram\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-15\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">And because it\u2019s Ina in late November, they also talk Thanksgiving. So I have a lot of Thanksgiving things now to get, like you can actually get good mashed potatoes. But then I add sour cream and Parmesan cheese and garlic, and it&#8217;s just delicious, and you have no idea that there&#8217;s a store-bought ingredient in there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Ina&#8217;s point is that it&#8217;s just about getting a beautiful meal on the table without losing your sanity.
