It&#8217;s the centerpiece of celebrations and holidays, and a way to connect with others. One of the most popular cookbooks of the last century makes that clear: more than 20 million copies of <em data-node-id=\"2.1\">The Joy of Cooking <\/em>have been sold. <em data-node-id=\"2.3\"\/>But while cooking can spark joy, can it also be good for our mental health? <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">It&#8217;s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/public-health-nutrition\/article\/is-cooking-at-home-associated-with-better-diet-quality-or-weightloss-intention\/B2C8C168FFA377DD2880A217DB6AF26F\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/public-health-nutrition\/article\/is-cooking-at-home-associated-with-better-diet-quality-or-weightloss-intention\/B2C8C168FFA377DD2880A217DB6AF26F\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"shown\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">shown<\/a> that people who regularly cook at home (rather than dining out or ordering in) tend to eat healthier and consume fewer calories. Increasingly, research shows those kitchen habits can have mental health benefits. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">A 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5862744\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5862744\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"meta-analysis\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\"><u data-node-id=\"4.1.0\">meta-analysis<\/u><\/a> from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) reviewed 11 studies on the mental health benefits of cooking and found that &#8220;cooking interventions&#8221; can boost self-esteem, decrease anxiety, and improve overall psychological well-being. <\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-13\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">So what&#8217;s a &#8220;cooking intervention&#8221;?  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drelisabethcrain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.drelisabethcrain.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Dr. Elisabeth Crain\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\"><u data-node-id=\"6.1.0\">Dr. Elisabeth Crain<\/u><\/a>, PsyD, a psychotherapist based in Southern California, explains it&#8217;s simply a term for adding structure or novelty to your routine\u2014following a recipe, starting a weekly cooking night, or taking a class.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cWhen we\u2019re going through a hard time, grabbing a cookbook and finding a recipe that speaks to us, shopping for the ingredients, and having fun in the kitchen can galvanize all those mental health benefits,\u201d Crain says. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-cooking-is-good-for-your-mental-health\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"body-h2 css-guqo8m emevuu60\">Why Cooking Is Good For Your Mental Health<\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Cooking can pull you out of a rut and redirect your focus to a tangible task, which helps shift your mental state, Crain notes. It\u2019s grounding and offers a sense of accomplishment\u2014essentially a built-in mindfulness practice. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vandanasheth.com\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"http:\/\/www.vandanasheth.com\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Vandana Sheth\" data-node-id=\"9.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">Vandana Sheth<\/a>, RDN, who specializes in diabetes education and intuitive eating, adds that cooking engages all the senses, fosters creativity, and can be a form of self-care that also builds connection with others.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">You might feel the benefits even more if you struggle with excessive screen time, have blurry boundaries between your work and home life, or find it hard to start and finish tasks, says Courtney Morgan, LPCC, and founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/counselingunconditionally.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/counselingunconditionally.com\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Counseling Unconditionally\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\"><u data-node-id=\"10.1.0\">Counseling Unconditionally<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Further <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22565407\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22565407\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\"><u data-node-id=\"11.1.0\">research<\/u><\/a> also shows that cooking taps executive functions\u2014planning, flexible thinking, and initiating tasks\u2014which is why cooking interventions often appear in occupational and rehabilitation therapy.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><a href=\"https:\/\/clf.jhsph.edu\/about-us\/news\/news-2014\/study-suggests-home-cooking-main-ingredient-healthier-diet\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/clf.jhsph.edu\/about-us\/news\/news-2014\/study-suggests-home-cooking-main-ingredient-healthier-diet\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Nutrition\" data-node-id=\"12.0\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">Nutrition<\/a> plays a role, too. Sheth suggests emphasizing nutrient-dense picks: leafy greens and avocado for magnesium, and oily fish, flaxseed, and walnuts for omega-3s\u2014both key for brain health and mood regulation. Upping daily fruit and vegetable servings (<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4940663\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4940663\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"research\" data-node-id=\"12.4\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">research<\/a> points to four to six) is associated with greater happiness and life satisfaction.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">One important caveat: Cooking can be therapeutic, but it is not therapy. \u201cRecognize how it\u2019s benefiting your life, but don\u2019t use it as a substitute for therapy,\u201d Crain says. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-baking-even-better-for-mental-health\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"body-h2 css-guqo8m emevuu60\">Is Baking Even Better For Mental Health? <\/h2>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"15\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Feeling a little stressed this holiday season? Choosing your favorite Christmas cookie recipe <u data-node-id=\"15.3\"\/>and baking might help.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Crain notes that baking&#8217;s step-by-step structure\u2014specific measurements and order of operations\u2014can be soothing. Use too much baking soda and your dessert won&#8217;t rise; <u data-node-id=\"16.1.0\">use measuring cups interchangeably<\/u>, and you&#8217;ll get a dense cake. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"17\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cIn that way, baking can be incredibly meditative,\u201d Crain says. \u201cWhile cooking still has recipes with required portions of ingredients, there\u2019s more room for interpretation.
