All you have to do is whip up the mix with cream cheese and Cool Whip, and you have yourself an easy, adorable dessert with a cake batter-like flavor.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> But just because these dips are delicious doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t dangerous to eat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> If they aren\u2019t made properly, these no-bake desserts should be avoided, as well as any other recipes that include raw cake mix. Despite popular belief, the danger isn\u2019t in the raw eggs going into the mix\u2014it\u2019s in the flour.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_18-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Flour may not seem like a \u201craw\u201d food, but it doesn&#8217;t undergo any heat treatment before it ends up in your pantry. That means it can be contaminated with pathogenic bacteria that can cause severe food poisoning, such as Escherichia coli (<em>E. coli<\/em>) and Salmonella.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> These germs can contaminate the wheat grain while it&#8217;s grown and harvested in the field, or as it\u2019s processed into flour, which means these harmful germs can end up on your beaters (or in your no-bake desserts).\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Be cautious of misleading information you might hear from online creators and recipe sites\u2014it is not safe to eat cake mix, or any products containing untreated flour, raw. Even if you\u2019ve heard some baking brands have \u201cupdated\u201d their mixes to be safe for raw consumption, be weary of the sources. More likely than not, they\u2019re still hazardous.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> In fact, just this year, the CDC reported a Salmonella outbreak linked to flour in raw doughs and batters, and in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.cdc.gov\/#\/details?url=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/2021\/o121-07-21\/details.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">an alarming outbreak of <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/2021\/o121-07-21\/details.html\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"3\">E. coli<\/a> <\/em>was linked to cake mix.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> So, are we requiring you to say goodbye to those delicious Funfetti dips for good? No, but we are insisting you take an extra step before mixing them up.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"heading-toc\" id=\"toc-how-to-eat-boxed-cake-mix-safely\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block allrecipes-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"> <span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\"> How To Eat Boxed Cake Mix Safely <\/span> <\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> When raw flour is cooked (like in a baked cake), the high heat kills any bacteria that could be contaminating the flour, making it safe to eat. So, all you have to do is heat the boxed cake mix to a safe temperature (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fsis.usda.gov\/food-safety\/safe-food-handling-and-preparation\/food-safety-basics\/safe-temperature-chart\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">160 degrees F<\/a>) to consume it without worry.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The easiest way to do this is to spread the cake mix evenly on a baking sheet and bake in a 350-degree F oven for about 5 minutes.
