The U.S. government has accused Italian producers of selling their products in America at “artificially low prices” and of failing to cooperate with an investigation led by the U.S. Department of Commerce, according to The New York Times. The consequence? A 91.74% anti-dumping duty.

Anti-dumping duties are used when governments believe that companies or foreign countries are engaging in unfair trade practices. The United States has imposed anti-dumping tariffs on Italian pasta producers for the past 30 years, and as a result, the government conducts routine investigations into these producers. A routine inquiry earlier this year, which the U.S. Department of Commerce said went unanswered, is the reason for the proposed 91.74% tariff.

However, Italian producers claim they provided the requested information, are shocked by the tariffs, and have appealed the decision. Not only will the tariffs apply to the two producers that “failed” the inquiry, but they will also affect almost a dozen other companies—Barilla, Rummo, Garofalo, La Molisana, Aldino, Gruppo Milo, and Pastificio Liguori, among them.

Related Story

Currently, Italian pasta producers face a 15% tariff that went into effect this summer. The impending new tariff would raise the total to a whopping 107%, making it largely impossible to sell pasta in the United States, a significant market. And these tariffs will have a trickle-down effect, possibly leading to higher prices in Italy and fake “Italian-made” labels on lower-quality products.

While Italian producers are hopeful that the appeals will resolve the situation (the final verdict is expected in early 2026), Americans are in a tizzy over the possibility of losing Italian pasta. “Gotta stock up on garofalo before this hits,” one person posted in a Reddit thread. “Well thats one way to piss off the Italian mafia,” another joked. “This would be the point where I start rioting if I was American,” one non-U.S. citizen commented.

Yet, many people saw the bright side: “It’s good for my diet though,” wrote one commenter. “We’ll still have Chef Boyardee,” another posted.
