ByHeart voluntarily recalled two lots of its Whole Nutrition Infant Formula after the CDC and FDA linked it to an outbreak that has so far seen 83 cases. The formula was sold online and at major retailers nationwide and has led to 13 hospitalizations across 10 states. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/botulism\/outbreaks-investigations\/infant-formula-nov-2025\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/botulism\/outbreaks-investigations\/infant-formula-nov-2025\/index.html\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"recall\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">recall<\/a>, infant botulism occurs when the bacteria <em data-node-id=\"3.3\">Clostridium botulinum <\/em>is ingested, leading to infection of the large intestine. Symptoms include constipation, difficulty feeding, loss of muscle tone, and a weak or altered cry. Consumers are advised to seek immediate medical attention if their infant has ingested the product and exhibits decreased facial expression, loss of head control, poor feeding, or difficulty swallowing. Of these, 13 babies had received ByHeart formula at some point.&#8221; <\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-16\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The company added that a sample from a &#8220;previously opened can&#8221; tested positive for the bacteria, but argued that &#8220;testing from a previously-opened can lacks scientific basis to establish causation between the product and illness. We know that <em data-node-id=\"7.1\">Clostridium botulinum <\/em>is a bacteria that exists naturally in the environment\u2014in places like soil, dust, and even vegetables\u2014meaning that an opened can can be contaminated in multiple ways.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">As such, the company says it is conducting third-party testing on the two recalled lots. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Even so, the CDC urges consumers to throw away the recalled infant formula or return it to the place of purchase. It also advises washing items and surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled formula.
