When a box says exactly what it is—think a direct, no-mystery freezer entrée—it’s because the team wants zero confusion about what’s in the bag and how to use it.

“Things like Cauliflower Gnocchi, Miller explained. “That tells you it’s a little pillow pasta type thing, but it’s made with cauliflower. Very straightforward.”

On the whimsical end, some names act as mini invitations to be curious and try something new. Sometimes the name is born first, and the product is tuned to fit that promise. Other times, a single detail—a size, texture, or origin—becomes the hook that lands on the front of the package.

“Well, someone working on a project, developing a product, could actually have a very crystal clear name in mind and they work to deliver a product that meets that name,” Sloan said. “Or sometimes, oftentimes, there are conversations along the way in development through and at the tasting panel where we almost workshop amongst ourselves an idea to say, ‘Man, those are giant olives. Those might be the world’s largest queen Saviano olives,’ and then it sticks from days long past.”

The duo also talked about recurring title patterns that hop across seasons and categories. When you spot a familiar turn of phrase on a new item—they specifically mention the “Walks into a Bar” product line—that’s intentional world-building: the Trader Joe’s “cinematic universe” of puns that helps you remember a product, then find it again six months later when it reappears in a new outfit.

And yes, some names are long on purpose. “The entire ethos of Trader Joe’s is we’d like you to enjoy yourself while you’re shopping for groceries,” Miller said. “And if putting a fun name or even a really strangely long descriptive name of a product on the package helps you find a little bit of fun in your grocery shopping experience, we’re all for that.”

Of course, TJ’s has a method to their whimsiness. The straightforward names help you cook dinner. The playful ones turn aisle-wandering into an adult adventure. Either way, the label is doing what Trader Joe’s wants most—making you feel good about what you’re grabbing.

On the Inside Trader Joe’s podcast, Tara Miller and Matt Sloan explain that product names range from practical to playful, aiming to inform and delight.
