He’s simplified the menu, closed down unnecessary mobile cafés, and brought back cup doodles. Now, an even bigger (almost inconceivable) update is coming: AI baristas that will literally predict your order.

During Salesforce’s annual Dreamforce event, Niccol revealed that the company is developing internal technology to help baristas prepare coffee more efficiently and even anticipate someone’s order before it’s placed. Starbucks is exploring how to implement AI to make it the “world’s greatest customer service company again,” Fortune reports.

The Seattle-based coffee giant has created a tool called Green Dot as a “kind of barista assistant.” And while it sounds like some sort of fever dream, it’s legit. A Starbucks rep told the outlet that Green Dot Assist was piloted in June and has since begun rolling out across stores.

According to TODAY, Niccol refuted the claim that AI could replace human baristas. “We’re not near that right now,” he said, adding that the company is prioritizing including “more partners back into our stores to give people a great, not robotic” experience. A spokesperson added that Green Dot is meant to “assist” employees and make their “jobs easier” rather than replacing them entirely.

Niccol said that the Starbucks app is the main focus for their AI implementation. How will it work? Customers won’t even have to open the app—just speak into their phone and say, “Hey, I need my Starbucks order. I’ll be there in 10 minutes.” Shook? Same.

It will “anticipate customer demand more accurately,” the spokesperson said. The “voice-driven ordering experiences” should make for a “more seamless and personalized” ordering process.

So, I guess robot baristas aren’t our future—at least not in the near term.

Brian Niccol announced Starbucks’ new AI technology at Salesforce’s annual Dreamforce event.
