\nIf you recently grabbed a bag of chia seeds from the grocery store, this is one recall worth taking seriously. Navitas Organics is recalling select lots of its Organic Chia Seeds due to potential Salmonella contamination, according to health officials.<\/p>\n
The Rhode Island Department of Health shared the recall<\/a>, noting that the impacted chia seeds were sold nationwide at retailers including Whole Foods, as well as through online sellers like Amazon. The recall applies specifically to Navitas Organics Organic Chia Seeds in 8-ounce pouches with the UPC 858847000284.<\/p>\n
“Navitas has provided Organic Chia Seeds to our customers for more than 20 years. Providing safe, healthy food for our customers is why we have been in business this long, and it’s why we are recalling this product today,” said Ira Haber, CEO, in the recall notice.<\/p>\n

If you have one of the affected bags at home, officials say you should stop eating it immediately. Customers can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.<\/p>\n
No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall so far, per health officials, but that doesn’t mean it’s nothing to shrug off. The FDA notes that Salmonella<\/a> can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms often include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can move into the bloodstream and lead to more severe complications.<\/p>\n
