Starbucks is the most recent company with pending litigation, following recent class action lawsuits against Pepsi, Walmart, and McDonald\u2019s. This week, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbsslaw.com\/sites\/default\/files\/case-downloads\/starbucks-consumer-class-action\/2026-01-13-complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.hbsslaw.com\/sites\/default\/files\/case-downloads\/starbucks-consumer-class-action\/2026-01-13-complaint.pdf\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"class action lawsuit\" data-node-id=\"2.7\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">class action lawsuit<\/a> was filed against the popular coffee chain, alleging human rights violations and toxic ingredients in its coffee.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">More specifically, the lawsuit says that Starbucks falsely claims \u201c100% Ethical Coffee Sourcing\u201d on its products, while investigations have found that its Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Program-certified farms have been found to force workers into dangerous conditions without proper protective gear, live in \u201cunacceptable\u201d spaces with mold, vermin infestations, and a lack of proper water and sewage, as well as \u201cmyriad other offenses that violate local labor laws.\u201d <br data-node-id=\"3.3\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">In a statement, a Starbucks representative said, \u201cWe take the allegations raised in the Williams and Strauss lawsuit seriously, but we firmly believe they are inaccurate[&#8230;]We maintain visibility into our supply chain, audit farms regularly, and take swift action when violations are reported\u2014including terminating supplier relationships when necessary.\u201d<br data-node-id=\"4.1\"\/><\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"watch-next\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-15\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The suit also claims that independent testing done on Starbucks\u2019 decaf house blend medium roast found volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including methylene chloride, benzene, and toluene. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\/what-are-volatile-organic-compounds-vocs\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\/what-are-volatile-organic-compounds-vocs\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"EPA\" data-node-id=\"6.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">EPA<\/a>, VOCs are gases emitted from many common liquids and solids, such as paints, cleaning supplies, and building materials, that can cause health issues like respiratory irritation, headaches, and nausea. The testing found levels of all three VOCs that exceeded what the EPA has determined as safe. Therefore, the lawsuit alleges that the company\u2019s \u201c100% Arabica coffee\u201d is misleading to consumers because it may expose them to unexpected chemicals.  <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThe safety and quality of our coffee is Starbucks\u2019 highest priority.
