Plant-based protein powders showed the highest levels, with many testing positive for heavy metals. Of all the products tested, a staggering  47% exceeded California\u2019s Proposition 65 safety thresholds for toxic metals.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">With so many concerned citizens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/food-safety\/these-five-protein-powders-had-low-lead-levels-a1151050701\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/food-safety\/these-five-protein-powders-had-low-lead-levels-a1151050701\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Consumer Reports\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\"><em data-node-id=\"3.1.0\">Consumer Reports<\/em><\/a> (CR) took it upon themselves to test five of their readers\u2019 most-used protein brands. The study found that four of the five products were below concern; one was slightly above but still considered acceptable for limited use.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">\u201cThe results suggest that safer manufacturing is possible, even for chocolate-flavored products, which some in the industry have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/food-safety\/how-lead-and-cadmium-get-into-dark-chocolate-a3299517114\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/food-safety\/how-lead-and-cadmium-get-into-dark-chocolate-a3299517114\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"claimed\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1i7jlb0 emevuu60\">claimed<\/a> are harder to keep clean. In particular, high levels of lead consumption can cause long-term health complications in the kidneys, brain, and other organs. Those concerned should get their protein from whole-food sources, or, as <em data-node-id=\"8.3\">CR<\/em>\u2019s recent study shows, from these five brands, which have lower lead levels deemed safe to consume.
