Shake Shack introduced its decadent Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Shake to an exclusive few U.S. cities in April. And while I was one of the lucky few to try it as part of its NYC menu debut, I was bummed to tell all my out-of-state friends and fam (who were clamoring to try it themselves) that they… couldn’t.
But, it’s almost as if the fast casual burger chain heard my cries. Now, they’re introducing the Dubai Shake to locations nationwide—starting today! According to the Food Network, the limited-edition treat can only be ordered in person at a counter or kiosk, and stores will sell a limited number each day. Maybe just to keep the exclusivity of Dubai chocolate alive??
At the start of the Dubai chocolate bar craze last summer, I was desperate to try the viral treat for myself. However, I refused to sample anything but the original, actually from Dubai version. Call me a brat, but I didn’t want to form my opinion around a copycat.
By September, I finally got my hands on the real thing—an indulgent milk chocolate bar stuffed with pistachio cream and knafeh filling flown straight from the City of Gold’s Fix Dessert Chocolatier (on first class, I’d imagine). It was even better than I had expected. But, ever since, I’ve been trying to chase the high of my first taste— with Amazon chocolate, Starbucks drinks, and even homemade brownies.
So, when I got word last spring that Shake Shack was planning to recreate the Dubai chocolate bar in milkshake form, I knew I was the right journalist for the job. It’s practically my beat at this point. Here’s what you need to know about the dessert before trying it for yourself.
An Honest Review
The shake features real pistachio frozen custard blended with the toasted kataifi (a.k.a. a buttery, shredded phyllo), topped with chopped pistachios, and even more kataifi. The cup is coated in a crackable dark chocolate shell, which breaks into the drink and provides the rich flavor combo we all know and love.
I went into the taste test with normal expectations. I didn’t anticipate disliking the drink by any means (it’s a milkshake, after all). I just wasn’t convinced it would satisfy my craving for Dubai chocolate. I was quickly proven wrong. Just one sip, and I was transported back to my first taste test in the Emirates suite at the U.S. Open. The pistachio custard had the perfect sweet-to-nutty ratio, and the kataifi added the right amount of texture. This, combined with the rich and indulgent dark chocolate, created a creamy take on the trend that checked every box.
I found myself quickly abandoning the straw and diving in spoon first, the better to fetch out little chunks of the magic shell chocolate with my pistachio custard and kataifi.
The Shake Shack Innovation Kitchen’s head chef was kind enough to recreate the actual chocolate bar, too, for a side-by-side, and it blew my mind how similar two very different desserts could taste. I loved how the chain allowed the pistachio and kataifi to shine (after all, they make Dubai chocolate Dubai chocolate) instead of basing the shake around a chocolate custard that would overwhelm those other key ingredients.
The Shake Shack Pistachio Dubai Shake officially joins menus nationwide on Tuesday, June 24.
