Sangria is a perfect cocktail for the holidays because it’s made all in one big pitcher and can be done ahead. It’s great to put out with glasses, ice, and a tray of garnishes. Your guests can help themselves to a festive cocktail while you finish up cooking. This recipe is fairly traditional but with a holiday twist, featuring flavors like tart cranberries and warm cinnamon. Seltzer isn’t so authentic, but we like this addition because it makes the drink a little less potent, so guests can indulge in more than one glass. Plus, we’ll take any opportunity to add a little more sparkle during the holiday season!

Which type of red wine should I buy?
The most authentic choice would be a Spanish wine, like Granacha or Tempranillo, which are both traditional wines used to make sangria. They’re medium-bodied and relatively easy to find. But Malbec or Pinot Noir would also be great choices as they are both on the lighter side and affordable. You don’t want to splurge on an expensive bottle for this because you’ll be mixing it with so many additional flavors.

Can I substitute the brandy?
It’s authentic to make sangria with brandy—it lends an amazing flavor that’s very traditional. But if you prefer, you can either leave it out entirely or substitute with triple sec or Grand Marnier. They both have a pleasant orange flavor that goes well with the other flavors in this sangria.
