If you aren’t familiar with the muffuletta sandwich, you should be. It’s filled with three different cured meats, a plethora of olives, roasted red peppers, and other brined ingredients. It’s big and proud, and this dip is the perfect scoopable version of it. Because the sandwich is a New Orleans’ native, it would be fun to serve the dip at any Mardi Gras celebration or just at your next gathering.
If you can find a muffuletta loaf—it’s what the sandwich is normally built on and named after—go ahead and use that. Otherwise, a sesame or other seed-crusted sourdough boule will do well—even a plain loaf works if you’re in a pinch! If you use a plain loaf, you can add some sesame seeds to the dip if you like. Use the pieces of bread you’ve carved out of the boule as dippers, and once the dip starts running low, you can slice pieces out of the bread bowl. Talk about zero waste!
