Peanut butter is part of several famous duos. There’s peanut butter and chocolate and peanut butter and jelly. But peanut butter and tequila? That one, not so much. So when we were sent a bottle of Chica Chida Peanut Butter Agave Spirit, we were intrigued.
Chica Chida isn’t technically a tequila; it’s an agave spirit. Tequila must be made with Blue Weber agave, and Chica Chida is made with espadín agave and allergen-free peanut butter extract. This means that it’s safe for people with peanut allergies. And at 32% ABV, Chica Chida is relatively low in alcohol compared to real tequila, which is at least 40% ABV in the U.S.
Now, for the taste test. It has a sweet, nutty aroma, which some of us didn’t mind, while others found it off-putting. There were mixed reviews on the flavor. It’s definitely very sweet and probably best served neat, on the rocks, or mixed into a dessert cocktail—think White Russian, mudslide, or espresso martini.
The spirit was launched in early 2024 as a collaboration between Piermont Brands and Barstool Sports’ Caleb Pressley. According to its website, the spirit is “A delightful shot that defies the industry’s prevailing seriousness.” It’s not an authentic tequila, although we do have plenty of recommendations for those.
