Guy Fieri has made it no secret that the last year has been a struggle following his dad’s death in January. In fact, he opened up about experiencing a “tough” first Father’s Day in June. And now, he’s getting deeper than ever about his late father Jim.

During a recent interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger, Fieri says that he connected with his father just two days after his passing.

“It screwed me up… a few days of, ‘I don’t want to talk to anybody. I don’t want to see anybody, just leave me alone,'” he said.

Then a personal friend—who is “ironically enough” a spiritual medium—contacted him. Fieri’s father was reportedly blowing her up.

“Your dad is all over me about you. He just wants you to know he’s…” she told Fieri.

According to Fieri, she started depicting things to him that “nobody in the world [would] know” what was going on.

“I mean it is goosebump city what I’m telling you,” Fieri said. According to the medium, these interactions don’t normally happen so quickly after a person’s passing. It’s typically closer to five or six days. However, she told the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives star that his dad was “really hell bent at getting in touch” with him.

The conversation with his dad also changed his plans for funeral arrangements.

“She’s not full of shit. I mean, I trust Karen quite a bit,” he said of the medium. “All the things that I said I wouldn’t do: I wasn’t gonna go for the cremation part and take him there. I wasn’t gonna go do that. I was just, ‘I don’t want any part of this.’ Something changed, took a whole different thing… I surprised myself about how I handled it.”

“And not that I didn’t ball my eyes out, and not that I don’t have my regret, not all that. It was just a different thing,” he said.

It wasn’t all bad that came from his father’s unfortunate death, however. Fieri’s bonded with his mom just that much more.

“The funny thing is, out of everything that’s happened, it has made me probably 10 times closer to my mom,” he said. “Not that my mom and I have not always been super close, but we’ve been close… in that we’re so similar in personality that there was a little bit of…it’s like when you’re too close to the person that you can almost be little smart asses together.”
